According to online sports and activity shoe retailer Fitness Footwear, 65% of sports enthusiasts are risking injury by wearing the wrong shoes for their chosen sport.

Its survey found that 21% of the population participate in sport three times a week, and by wearing the same generic pair of sports shoes for a variety of different pursuits, individuals are risking injury and hampering performance. Ill-fitting sports shoes can cause a range of problems such as shin splints and traumatised toes as well as serious back and knee pain.

Founder of Fitness Footwear, Luke Barlow, said: "Many people don't realise that different activities require different footwear and tend to buy one pair of generic trainers which are worn for every activity they participate in. We are trying to make people aware that they need to wear different sports shoes depending on what activity they are doing to protect their feet and avoid sports-related injuries."
