India’s Footwear Design & Development Institute (FDDI) is to assist the Sri Lankan government in designing, installing and commissioning a footwear training institute.

"We have received a letter from the Clothing Industry Training Institute (CITI), ministry of textile industry development, government of Sri Lanka, seeking consultancy from FDDI for establishing a footwear training institute in Sri Lanka,” explained FDDI’s managing director, Rajeev Lakhara. “We are expanding on the global stage.”

Back in February, a Sri Lankan delegation including government representatives and Nimal Samarakkody, chairman, Ceylon Leather Products Ltd. visited the FDDI expressing their desire to establish a footwear training institute in Sri Lanka. A long discussion with Mr Lakhara took place, and he assured the delegation that they would have the FDDI’s full support in setting up the footwear training institute in Sri Lanka. It will have three main components: a design studio, a laboratory and a training department.
