Newly released customs data shows that in the first half of this year Xinjiang has become the fastest-growing region in China for overseas trade.
Xinjiang, in the far north west of the country, has until recently played a much more limited role in China's participation in globalisation than the major port and industrial cities in the south and east.
However, the region, which has borders with Mongolia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, has exported goods worth an extra $8.97 billion in the first six months of 2008 compared to the same period last year.
This represents growth of 92.1%, which is 66.4% higher than the national average.
Footwear exports have been at the heart of this, passing $10 billion in value for the half-year period, which represents an increase of 120%.
