Hope for sports footwear

Sales of sports footwear in the US are expected to grow in 2008, according to James Hartford, chief market analyst for research firm SportsOneSource.

Hartford made his remarks at the WSA Show in Las Vegas at the end of July. Despite weaknesses in the women’s business, which Mr Hartford said will remain flat for the year, the analyst said overall business was good.

“In spite of a tough economy, consumers have responded to more seasonal weather patterns and positive moves by mall specialty retailers to focus on the evolving needs of their customers,” he said. “The first quarter was tough for many retailers and brands, as winter weather persisted in many parts of the country, cutting into sales of traditional spring and summer items early in the season. Conversely, the second quarter turned positive for the market for the year-to-date period.”
