Struggle in Colombia
04/07/2008
The footwear industry in Colombia is going through a difficult period, according to a survey of manufacturing firms in the sector, carried out by industry association Acicam.
The study, which involved 114 companies in the four main production centres of the country (Antioquía, Santander, Bogotá and Valle del Cauca), showed that 1,400 jobs had gone in the last year, that imports into Colombia from overseas had increased quickly, and that the financial performance of local producers had suffered as a result.
Acicam president, Luis Gustavo Flórez, said his organisation had already begun to receive reports of companies closing down in Bogotá, Medellín and Bucaramanga.
