New quota agreement with China
03/06/2008
Media in Mexico are reporting that the country has reached agreement with China over footwear imports.
Tariffs on shoes imported from China were due to be lifted at the start of 2008. After street protests and lobbying on the part of the industry, the tariffs stayed in place while the Mexican government—which has consistently been accused of lacking support for local manufacturers, preferring to boost the volume of trade with China—negotiated a settlement.
Reports now suggest the two governments have agreed to keep tariffs in place for four more years, and that Mexico and China will ratify this in writing over the next few days. They also say this new agreement has come outwith the World Trade Organisation.
