China registers growth in leather exports

During the first three monthsof 2008, China’s leather sector recorded a growth in exports of 9.6% to $5.7 billion from $5.2 billion in corresponding period last year, according to official data from the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA).
In spite of ongoing anti-dumping measures from the European Union, the value of exports of leather footwear rose by 2.3% to $ 2.1 billion. However, the quantity of shoes exported fell by 15.5% to 27.8 million pairs.
Over the same period, China imported leathergoods worth $1.6 billion, which represents an increase of 1.5% compared to the same period last year.
