13/05/2008
Mexico's national museum of footwear, which has been closed for two years, will re-open on May 21.
The facility, owned and run in Mexico City by footwear retailer El Borceguí, contains examples of the different traditional types of footwear people have been making and wearing for generations in the different regions of the country. It also has on show shoes worn by famous people, including sports stars, actors and even one of the boots astronauts wore on the Apollo space missions. Shoes worn by the queen of the United Kingdom are also on display there.
With a collection of 20,000 exhibits in all, the museum claims to be the largest of its kind in Latin America.
