China leather footwear prices still falling
12/05/2008
During
the first two months of this year, China’s leather sector recorded a
growth of 1.7% in exports to $3.9 billion from $3.842 billion in
corresponding period last year. The figures come from official data of
China Leather Industry Association (CLIA).
The most important segment was, as expected footwear, but although the total number of pairs exported (25.1 million) represented a 27.5% increase on the first two months of 2007, the amount of money the shoes earned ($1.5 billion) was down on the previous year by 3.1%. This suggests that downward pressure on prices for Chinese goods is continuing.
China imported worth $978 million of different leather articles between January and February 2008, an increase of 6.3%.
