US footwear retailer DSW has posted lower-than-expected first-quarter sales figures.

Same-store sales fell by 5.4% and the company said it expected same-store sales to be in the negative mid-single digits for the year.

Net sales rose by 3% to $366.3 million for the quarter ended May 3 as a result of a store expansion plan that DSW has in place.
