Ireland suffers first retail fall in four years

25/04/2008

Ireland's retail sales fell slightly in February, compared to February last year, but the statistic is significant because it is the first year-on-year fall the country has suffered since January 2004.

Overall, the drop, excluding “price effects”, was only 0.1%, but the results for footwear were down by 1.6%.

Commentators said that increases in the housing, automotive and energy sectors had begun to affect consumer confidence.
