Questions over Crocs in Japan
23/04/2008
Japan's trade ministry has asked the manufacturer of Crocs to improve the material and design of the footwear following a series of accidents in which wearers, mainly children, were injured while using escalators.
Reports from Japan suggest too many wearers were catching the toe of the shoes between the steps and sides of escalators, resulting in cuts, bruising and, in a small number of cases, broken toes.
Tests at Japan's National Institute of Technology and Evaluation suggested that the polyethylene resin Crocs are made from made them susceptible to this kind of accident.
The footwear manufacturer responded to reports saying that it had already begun improving the quality of the material it uses to make the coloured clogs. It also said most escalator accidents were the result of carelessness on the part of the people using them.
