Spanish brands take their charisma to Korea

A delegation of high- and medium-end Spanish footwear brands has travelled to South Korea to try to make greater inroads in the Asian country's shoe market.

The two-day commercial mission has been organised by the Spanish Footwear Industries Federation (FICE). The industry body says its analysis of the Korean market suggests it is an attractive place for footwear companies from Spain. FICE said it had been impressed by Korea's dynamism and by the growing enthusiasm among consumers there to buy overseas brands.

It added that it believed brands to be of great importance to Korean consumers, which meant the Spanish companies in the delegation would have to work hard to build up their brand-names there and find good local distributors to work with.

One member of the party, Luis Ferrero, president of the chamber of commerce in the main footwear-producing province, Alicante, told Spanish media: "Italian shoes sell better than ours here, even though Spanish shoes are of equal quality." He said this was a reflection of Spanish shoe brands' comparatively low profile on the international stage, something this trip aimed to correct.
