Workers strike at Nike supplier's factory
03/04/2008
About 17,000 workers at a Vietnam factory that makes footwear for Nike have been on strike for three days, demanding higher salaries and better working conditions (inlcuding better food at the site) local trade union official said.
The factory in Long An province, owned by Vietnam Ching Luh Shoes, pays workers a basic wage of $58 a month, but workers have asked for a 22% increase.
The factory is one of the 50 that Nike uses in Vietnam
and accounts for 12% of its output in Vietnam, where Nike makes about 30% of its global supply of shoes. Strikes have been taking place regularly across the Vietnamese footwear industry since the start of 2008.
