Business trip raises eyebrows

28/03/2008

The footwear manufacturing industry in Mexico has reacted with surprise to the news that a working group comprising local officials from the state of Guanajuato—where much of the industry is centred—will visit China next month with a view to attracting investment.

The party will be headed by the state’s director of economic development, Juan Antonio Fernández Ortega and will also include local politicians Saraí Núñez and Luis Felipe Pesquera. Officials from inward investment agency Cofece will accompany them.

Local media have said that the party will discuss the possibility of Chinese footwear manufacturers setting up operations at a new industrial park in Celaya. Protests over “falsely cheap” footwear imports from China spilled onto the streets of state capital, León, at the end of last year as Mexican manufacturers claimed they were fighting to save their livelihoods.
