Election affects Modacalzado attendance, but organisers satisfied

The spring edition of Madrid’s leather and footwear fairs, Sipiel and Modacalzado, have said that the events went well, especially given that the last day, Sunday, March 9, coincided with general elections in Spain.
The opening day of the fairs, Friday, March 7 attracted 1,500 more visitors than the corresponding day last year. The organisers, Ifema, believe that this pattern repeated itself on the middle day, Saturday, leaving lower numbers on Sunday as buyers from Spain wanted to be at home to vote.
Some exhibitors even said that Spanish buyers chose to travel to Milan to call on them there instead this year, because of the way the dates fell. However, most said they were still satisfied with the level of interest from visitors to Modacalzado.
Rafael Calvo, president of the Spanish Footwear Industry Federation (FICE), commented at the end of the exhibitions: “The outlook for these fairs wasn’t too bright, but we can say that, in the end, the result was reasonably good.”
