Spain's footwear exports up 10%
04/03/2008
The Spanish footwear industry exported 100 million pairs of shoes last year, which earned €1.9 billion in revenues. These figures, just released by the Spanish Footwear Industries Federation (FICE), represent a 10% increase on the sector's 2006 results.
In announcing the news, FICE president, Rafael Calvo, said the worst days of downturn and job-losses were now behind the industry in Spain and said there were real grounds for optimism for the future, especially if Spanish brands and manufacturers are able to continue to carve out a niche for themselves in new markets.
He said markets such as Russia, the Middle East, eastern Europe and Asia—especially China—were of great importance to the Spanish industry. He insisted, though, that footwear producers in his country would continue to serve well more traditional markets such as western Europe and the United States.
