In light of the recent spate of bankruptcies amongst British footwear retailers, the need to understand consumers’ needs and demands is more crucial than ever.

Therefore Ireland-based market research company Research and Markets’ latest publication, “Consumer Satisfaction Index 2008: UK Footwear”, may prove a useful tool to many.

The study measures and ranks customer satisfaction for all the significant retailers in the UK sector over the past six years (2003-2008) and includes  ratings based on the eight performance markers of price, range, quality, service, convenience, ambience, layout and facilities, looking at 22 leading footwear retailers such as Clarks, Marks & Spencer, Next, Asda, JJB Sports and Brantano.

TK Maxx came out in first place in the listings, attaining the highest score for price, while Clarks and Debenhams topped the list for quality and service. Meanwhile, M&S slipped to third in terms of quality and service and delivered a weaker performance across the majority of metrics in this year's report.
