Sustainable shoes go on show
British footwear designer Fiona Campbell recently presented a new collection of shoes made entirely from sustainable materials at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
Designed as part of her MA (Master of Arts) course at the London College of Fashion, the collection, called Renew, includes materials such as recycled luggage, vintage and E.leather — a new material that is produced from leather offcuts, 30% of which would normally go to landfill, and which consumes less water during production as a result of close loop recycling.
Having spent more than ten years working at bespoke footwear company James Taylor in London, Ms Campbell transferred her knowledge of traditional techniques to design and hand make the fashion collection, which includes heels reinforced with sculpted leather counters to prolong wear, and ergonomically positioned straps to support the foot. “I’m putting the craft into fashion,” she said.
