The latest member of the famous Gandhi political dynasty to enter the Indian parliament has thrown his weight behind a protest involving footwear manufacturers in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

Rahul Gandhi, member of parliament for the Uttar Pradesh town Amethi, has written to state premier,
Mayawati Naina Kumari, asking her to remove a 12% value-added tax (VAT) that it has imposed on traditional hand-made leather shoes.

Mr Gandhi has also promised to visit the manufacturers, clustered around the city of Agra, to bring further government attention to their plight.
