Official hits back: footwear firms should work harder

A government minster, whose department came in for fierce criticism from industry representatives last week following a protest march by footwear manufacturers in the Mexican city of León has hit back.

Eduardo Sojo, the country's minister for the economy, was clearly angered by the protests directed towards his officials, some of whom faced calls for their resignations. The protests were a response to the government's perceived lack of action in the face of the lifting of tariffs on Chinese imports to Mexico at the start of the new year. Mr Sojo said at the weekend that footwear manufacturers and other groups involved in the dispute should put all their energy into working harder instead of attacking government officials.

He had more encouraging news for the sector, however. He said the government was in discussion with the World Trade Organisation about keeping tariffs on 17 groups of products and said the government would reveal the details in the coming days.
