Workers receive sad Christmas news

14/12/2007

Canadian safety footwear manufacturer Terra has delivered an unseasonal message to the workers in its Markdale, Ontario factory: 50 of the 100 people who work there will lose their jobs in the new year.

Terra's vice-president for marketing, David McCarthy, told local media that the company had been very reluctant to break the bad news at this time of year, but he said it was essential for the company to act as quickly as possible.

He said current market forces had led to the decision: the Canadian dollar is stronger than its US counterpart, making exports from Canada to its biggest trading partner more expensive. At the same time, anti-dumping measures on cheaper imports of safety footwear into Canada have ended, making the domestic market tough too.

There will be no lay-offs at Terra's other factory in Newfoundland.
