China confirms closure of 1,000 footwear factories

State media in China have reported that almost 1,000 footwear factories had closed in the course of 2007, half of them in the province of Guangdong.
Industry commentators in Asia have said the closures have mainly affected small and medium-sized producers that had been hit by rising costs, anti-dumping measures imposed by the European Union on Chinese leather footwear exports, the low value of the dollar and an end to tax breaks on exports.
