Footwear export target likely to be missed

Despite reporting a 9.5% rise in exports so far this year, Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry has announced that the country’s leather and footwear sectors are likely to fall short of their 2007 target of $4 billion due largely to a shortage of labour.

Whilst demand for goods remains high, many manufacturers are struggling to accept or complete larger orders due to a lack of workers. As a result November exports are not expected to exceed last year’s figure of $320 million and this takes the year-to-date figure to only $3.53 billion, meaning that the sectors would have to export a massive $500 million-worth of goods in December alone if it were to reach its target for the year.
