Smuggling operation uncovered

06/12/2007

Following a long undercover operation, ten people have been charged in New York over the smuggling and trafficking of $200 million worth of Chinese-made counterfeit goods — including fake Nike shoes — through the port of Newark.

According to the US attorney and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, since June 2006 the criminal ring has smuggled and attempted to smuggle more than one hundred 40-foot shipping containers loaded with counterfeit merchandise through Port Newark and paid more than $500,000 in cash bribes to an undercover ICE agent who posed as a corrupt longshoreman's union official.
