Retail sales slip but footwear edges higher

According to provisional results released by Germany’s Federal Statistical Office, when adjusted for calendar and seasonal variations retail turnover slipped 2.9% in nominal terms and 3.3% in real terms in October compared with September and by 0.8% in real terms and 1.6% in real terms in the first ten months. However, despite this overall negative trend certain sectors, including footwear and leather goods, managed to post improvements. 

Month-on-month, textile, clothing, footwear and leather goods retailers posted a 1.9% rise in sales in nominal terms and a 1.1% increase in real terms, beaten only by cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and medical products which posted a nominal rise of 3.6% and a real increase of 1.9% and mail order businesses which posted 2.2% nominal growth and 1.7% real improvement.
