Said to be Canada’s largest retailer of sporting goods, The Forzani Group Ltd., has announced plans to acquire struggling Toronto-based retailer of athletic and recreational footwear and apparel Athletes World Limited.

Athletes World, which generated $186 million in revenues in the last fiscal year and currently operates 138 stores, obtained protection under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act on October 30. It will now seek court approval of the transaction later this week. If granted, it is expected that the transaction will close at the end of November.
