Affordable Footwear Act introduced into US Senate

20/11/2007

Three US senators have formally introduced the bi-partisan Affordable Footwear Act of 2007 (S. 2372) to the US Senate in the hope of eliminating the import tariffs, collectively known as the shoe tax, on all lower- to moderately-priced footwear as well as all children’s shoes coming into the USA.

This act is a companion bill to the Affordable Footwear Act of 2007 (H.R. 3934) which was introduced into the US House of Representatives last month.

Commenting on the introduction of the bill, Kevin Burke, president and CEO of the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) said, “The Affordable Footwear Act of 2007 is responsible tax relief for all Americans.”

99% of all footwear sold in America is now imported and, according to those supporting the act, the shoe tax has out-lived its purpose in protecting the domestic footwear industry.
