Spain's footwear plan signed
30/10/2007
The €49 million aid programme that the Spanish parliament has agreed for the footwear industry became formal today at a signing ceremony in Elche, the largest centre for footwear production in the country.
The minister for industry, tourism and commerce, Joan Clos, signed on behalf of the government, while the president of the Spanish footwear industry federation, Rafael Calvo, signed for manufacturers and two trade union representatives on behalf of the 40,000 workers still involved in the industry in Spain.
Mr Clos said he was happy that lengthy negotiations among all the interested parties had reached "this happy end". He added: "We're the second biggest producer of footwear in the European Union and the tenth biggest worldwide and we don't want to lose any ground. If anything we want to gain ground [on competitors]."
