Devastation at Chinese shoe factory

22/10/2007

Reports indicate that 37 people were killed and a further 19 were injured during a blaze at a shoe factory in southeast China.

The fire broke out at the unlicensed factory in the suburbs of Putian city, in the Fujian province, on October 21 as a number of employees worked overtime.

According to reports, the factory contained storage areas, workshops and dormitories and had not responded to government warnings about fire risks earlier in the year.

The factory owners have been detained by police and an inquiry into the fire has already been launched.
