New innovation award for TFL

Switzerland-based TFL Ledertechnik has been named as one of four ICIS Innovation Awards 2007 winners. The company won the award for the best product innovation for its solar reflective (Cool) leather.

Recognising that dark leather can become uncomfortably hot in direct sunlight, TFL has developed a range of Cool dyes and pigments which do not absorb near-infrared (NIR) waves. These waves pass through the coating and the leather's natural collagen fibre network then reflects the NIR rays back through the coating without being absorbed or allowing heat to build up.

According to the company, it is the dyes and pigments working together that ensure rays are reflected. The technology can be used for footwear, garments and leather upholstery.
