Debate over Kangaroo footwear almost at an end
The legalisation of the sale of kangaroo hide products in California is under scrutiny at the moment and governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has little time left to deliberate on the issue.
The hides are primarily used to make high-end footwear and, most famously, football boots, which have been worn by world-famous players such as David Beckham.
There is some confusion over the legality of such products. It has been illegal to use kangaroo-culled goods in the state for 37 years; however, retailers have continued to sell the shoes as federal regulations do not recognise the animals as being an endangered species.
The arguments for and against a ban are plentiful, with many considering the method of killing inhumane, and others considering the cull of the overabundant animal as vital in terms of the survival of other endangered creatures.
A decision is to be made early next week.
