Double-digit growth for Italian footwear's US exports

Italy's exports have grown in the first seven months of the year, delighting the country's minister for international commerce, Emma Bonino.
Ms Bonino said on reporting the numbers that the results were so good, Italy would have a trade excess if it did not have to spend so much importing fuel.
Exports to the US have done particularly well, especially given the strength of the euro and the weakness of the dollar. For the period between January and July, Italy earned €7.9 billion in exports to the US.
Footwear exports to the US during the period to July were up by 10.5%.
"The numbers are very encouraging," Ms Bonino said, "especially for exporting companies. All of our traditional, 'Made in Italy' sectors have grown, even those, such as footwear, that have had to work so hard in the face of global competition. We know the challenge from the global market is one that requires us to make a constant effort and to keep adapting, but it's a challenge we're happy to face."
