Peru plans protection too

Just when the tension between Argentina and China over footwear imports seemed to be easing, Peru's minister for production, Rafael Rey, has said his government, too, is planning special protection measures.

The minister said his country was preparing for discussions with China and would this week agree a letter of intent to boost business with its Asian trading partner.

He said this was a necessary step as China was quickly becoming the biggest market in the world. He also said the manufacturers of Peru supported the idea of talks.

However, he made it clear that there would be some exceptions. "In sensitive areas, such as footwear and leather, we want to protect ourselves," the minister said.
