International Footwear Conference arrives in Chennai

31/08/2007

India’s Council of Leather Exports is hosting the 26th edition of the International Footwear Conference in Chennai today and tomorrow.

This is the first time that India has hosted the conference.

The Council said it regarded the conference as a good opportunity to show delegates from overseas around Indian footwear factories.

Across the leather sector as a whole, the industry in India is suffering a poor year so far, owing, the Council claims, to fluctuations in the value of the US dollar.

Indian leather exports reached a record level of $1.21 billion last year. Industry leaders have said that the only way for them to emulate that performance this year will be by increasing exports through the introduction of new designs and new production levels in factories such as the ones the International Footwear Conference will cover.
