The recent WSA footwear exhibition in Las Vegas recorded a 107% increase in the number of visitors representing online footwear retailers, reflecting a trend that has been evident in sales of shoes in the US in the second half of the decade so far.

The event's chief operating officer, Diane Stone, commented on revealing the increase that footwear brands exbibiting had expected to see buyers and specifiers from department stores, mass merchandisers, chains and independent shoe retailers, as usual.

But she added: "As new retail channels develop for the output of this industry, we actively recruit their attendance so exhibitors can obtain greater results from their show participation, opening new routes of distribution and touch points between their brands and the consumer."

The founder of one internet footwear retailer, Nick Swinmurn, has claimed that it won’t be long before 30% of shoe sales in the US take place online. His company, Zappos, has one of the largest shares of online sales at the moment.
