Optimistic forecast on exports

Vietnam’s footwear exports could top $6 billion by 2010. The prediction comes from the deputy chairman of the country’s Leather and Footwear Association, Nguyen Duc Thuan.
He also revealed that the government is preparing to put together a funding package of almost $600 million to help Vietnam’s 412 footwear manufacturers expand production. It hopes that $350 million of this capital investment will come from overseas companies in the course of the next three-and-a-half years.
Mr Thuan said a “masterplan” was in place for the Vietnamese footwear industry to produce 720 million pairs of shoes a year, which is more than Spain, Italy and Portugal put together.
