Red shoes put Pope on best-dressed list

Pope Benedict XVI has joined sports stars, actors and politicians, including French president Nicolas Sarkozy and US presidential hopeful Barack Obama, on Esquire magazine’s list of best-dressed men.

The German Pontiff failed to make the main list, but the magazine did put him at the top of a separate section covering accessories, thanks to the red leather shoes he wears.

The shoes, from the famous Roman ecclesiastical tailor Gammarreli, have been part of Papal garb for centuries, but Benedict XVI’s preference for shorter cassocks has won them more attention in recent times.
