Footwear workers receive extra help

03/08/2007
Workers in the Brazilian footwear industry who lost their jobs between June 1 2006 and May 31 this year will receive extra unemployment benefits.

In Brazil, workers with unemployment insurance usually receive a series of five payments to help them make ends meet while looking for another job. In the case of the 85,000 workers who have lost jobs in the leather and footwear industries in the last year or so, the number of payments will be increased to seven.

This is the third time in recent years these special measures have been applied to footwear. Workers who had been laid off also received extra payments in 2005 and 2006.
