Footwear to trigger rapid growth in Indian leather industry

08/05/2007

Reports indicate that Indian leather exports, which are currently worth approximately $3 billion, may increase to $8 billion within five years, a 267% rise.

Companies within the burgeoning leather footwear sector are expected to do particularly well, with the 250,000 pairs of footwear that are presently produced per day likely to increase to over 1.5 million pairs.

In addition, the sector’s labour force is expected to grow from 2.5 million to 4.5 million by 2012.

India currently accounts for 10% of global leather production and 15% of global footwear production.
