Oleg Strijakov of Russia has won the Masters “Over 40” Boston Marathon wearing a pair of ‘banned’ Spira running shoes, featuring the company’s WaveSpring technology. Mr Strijakov won the race in 2:28:55. Spira running shoes which feature ‘springs’ are banned from competition under Rule 143 of the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) and the United States Association of Track and Field (USATF) which does not allow spring technology to be used in footwear. Spira footwear filed a lawsuit in US Federal District Court last week against IAAF and the USATF, alleging that the application of this rule constitutes a violation of the Sherman Anti Trust Act and a restraint of trade.
