PVC Calçados turns waste into sandals

16/04/2007

Environmentally-friendly sandals made from recycled PVC are being produced in
Juazeiro do Norte, a town in the north eastern Brazilian state of Ceará.

"Our sandals are ecologically sound as they are made from a material that would take over 100 years to decompose," explained Glaidston Gonçalves de Lucena, owner of the company PVC Calçados.

The company has been making PVC footwear for ten years and currently produces 17,000 pairs of thong sandals daily, employing 180 workers.

It buys approximately 120 tons of PVC waste per month which is then made into 20 different styles of sandal.
