US-based Payless ShoeSource, which claims to be the largest specialty family footwear retailer in the Western Hemisphere, has appointed Bill May to the newly-created role of executive vice president and chief operating officer, effective April 23. He will lead the finance, store development and IT functions for the company, reporting to Matt Rubel, chief executive officer and president.

From 2004 to 2007, Mr May served as executive vice president and chief operating officer of Tween Brands.

As of the end of the fourth quarter 2006, Payless ShoeSource operated a total of 4,572 stores.
