Sri Lanka’s footwear exports increase nearly 50%

According to Sri Lankan Customs and the country’s Central Bank, the country’s footwear exports are thriving, reaching $19.22 million in the period January to November 2006. This equates to a 48.88% increase year-on-year, compared with the $12.91 million reported in the same period of 2005.

On a less positive note, leather exports from Sri Lanka slipped 6.7% from $42.64 million in the 11-month period of 2005 to $39.78 million during the same period of 2006. The country’s leather and leather goods exports declined a significant 30.84% in the same period, falling from $29.45 million to $20.56 million.

Meanwhile, the country’s total exports stood at $6.882 billion for the January to November 2006 period, compared with $6.344 billion in the prior year.
