Former shoe manufacturer and chairman of the Two-Ten Footwear Foundation Melvin Nessel died on February 15, aged 87, following a brief illness.

In the late 1940s, Mr Nessel purchased the Fenton Shoe Co. in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The company produced women’s dress and novelty shoes and boots using the cement process. In later years, the company imported footwear from Italy, Spain and Brazil.

A known philanthropist, he donated generously to hospitals and donated paintings by artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Miro and De Kooning to art museums.
