Innovative footwear presented at WSA

Designer fashion footwear and accessories event The Collections at WSA, which will be held in Las Vegas from February 1-4, is to host more than 180 new exhibitors presenting footwear and accessories for autumn/winter 2007/08.

According to chief operating officer Diane Stone, “Innovation is everywhere – in materials, design, technology, and functionality.” She added, “Some manufacturers are finding new uses for materials, while others are introducing new systems that will change the way we walk and run.”

Technological innovation is most apparent in athletic performance footwear such as Isaac Daniel and Z-Coil.  Fele’s Isaac Daniel design team recently launched its Compass Global 1000 – Inventor’s Limited Edition, the world’s first patented GPS satellite tracking enabled walking shoes. The technology is incorporated into seven different men’s and women’s models with 19 colour combinations.

Z-Tech’s second-generation Z-Coil Footwear features a shock-absorbing design to reduce impact and distribute pressure more evenly across the foot. The new Freedom 2000 product, with its conical steel coil, reduces the rate of impact absorbed by the heel to alleviate pain.

Various eco-friendly companies, such as ‘vegan’ brands, Charmone and Earth, are producing new collections that include no animal products. Others, such as Dan Post Boots Co. and Teva, are launching new collections made from recycled tyres and other rubber products.

Other brands are offering versatility: George Taveras’ ‘Jour & Nuit’ designer women’s collection features interchangeable straps that can be removed completely and transferred to other soles in their line. For children, Zipz will introduce shoes and accessories that zip apart to allow interchangeable tops and bottoms, as well as to provide space for children to safeguard keys or other items.

The twice-yearly events attract more than 36,000 participants from 95 countries.
