Sri Lankan footwear exports increase rapidly

According to figures released by
Sri Lanka’s Customs and Central Bank, although the country’s exports of leather and leather goods declined by 23% to $16.14 million in the first nine months of 2006, footwear exports increased by 43.52% to $13 million, compared with $9 million in the same period in 2005.

In an attempt to improve quality and exports, the Sri Lankan Ministry of Enterprise Development and Investment Promotion has established several advisory committees to promote public/private partnerships in 19 major sectors, including footwear and rubber.
