Minister highlights employment potential in Indian SME sector
Speaking at the fifth ‘Commonwealth-India Small Business Competitiveness Development Programme’ meeting Indian Minister of Small Scale Industries and Agro and Rural Industries, Shri Mahabir Prasad, stated that the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) sector has the maximum potential for generating employment opportunities, whilst the agricultural sector and large industry have a limited scope for generating new jobs employment, despite a high level of investment.
He said that small enterprises play a significant role in sectors such as ready-made garments, leather, agro-food processing, light engineering, ceramics and information technology; but he added that in order to assist micro and small enterprises, their specific needs should be identified and brought to the notice of policy makers, the Minister said.
The theme of the five-day Commonwealth-India Small Business Competitiveness Development Programme is “SME Development, Growth and Poverty Alleviation”.
