As exports to Africa grow, Zhejiang shoe industry looks beyond the EU

31/10/2006

During the first three quarters of this year, African imports of shoes from
Zhejiang, China, rose by 38.4% and by 30.5% in value on the same period in the previous year. During January to September, Zhejiang exported a total of 1,190 million pairs of shoes - a value of $2.94 billion - with African imports reaching 201 million pairs at a value of $320 million.

Along with Africa, shoes made in Zhejiang are mainly exported to the EU, Ukraine, USA, Russia, Japan and the mid east Asian countries. Despite the duties imposed on shoes made in China, the EU remains a key and growing market for Zhejiang’s exports, notably Germany, Spain and the UK. The Zhejiang shoe industry association, however, is advising that in light of these duties, exporters should shift their focus to non-EU markets as well as improving shoe quality.
