Italy seeks more rigid EU labelling laws

Reports indicate that the National Association of Italian Footwear
Manufacturers (ANCI) is calling for clearer European Union labelling laws which would force manufacturers to stipulate where products are made, ranging from footwear to furniture.

At present, EU law does not demand that manufacturers state where components are made, so shoemakers are able to produce parts in low-cost labour countries, such as south east Asia, while selling the finished shoe as European.

ANCI asserts that imports must be labelled to show where parts are produced and where the entire product is assembled in order to protect jobs.

The Association brings together Italian footwear manufacturers and has approximately 1,000 industrial enterprises members. The turnover produced by the member companies represents approximately 70% of overall Italian footwear production.
